Overview
St. Benedict's in Easterhouse was designed by the Glasgow architects Gillespie, Kidd & Coia, and had stood for nearly 40 years.  It was a Grade B listed building which had a number of defects which were in urgent need of repair. In addition, the Diocese of Motherwell wished to develop a community facility in the Easterhouse area.
Consequently, the project consisted of three parts;
1. The construction of a new external entrance as an extension to the existing building;
2. The construction of new internal ‘pods’, and associated internal re-modelling;
3. The repair of the existing Church and Presbytery.

The new works consisted of a low rise extension to the existing Church. This extension comprised a new lift and stairs, as well as disabled access and toilet facilities.  The roof was copper to match the existing and the scale of the extension was carefully considered to match the existing building.

The internal works comprised the construction of two new spaces within the volume of the Church to house new community facilities. There were two general purpose halls, a café and a chapel. These were constructed from steel frames supporting glazed panels and sliding screens. The existing plan layout was also remodelled to allow for new toilet provision, new offices, a new kitchen and associated circulation spaces. The Altar area was also remodelled to suit the changing requirements of the Church.

Overview
Due to the sloping site, a design quickly evolved around the idea of cutting the new structure into the existing slope to follow the natural ground profile, thus allowing the formation of a Community Hall under the Church.
